Carbon13 Partners with DLA Piper
Global law firm DLA Piper has partnered with Carbon13 to support our cohort of founders as they develop highly scalable ventures that can make a significant impact on CO2e emissions. We’re delighted to welcome DLA Piper to the Carbon13 community and look forward to our founders benefitting from their wealth of experience advising clients on sustainability, covering all aspects of environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategies.
It is this support for our nascent startups that will give them a greater likelihood of successfully scaling into a venture large enough to be capable of reducing emissions by 10 million tonnes.
Chris Coleridge, Carbon13’s Founder and CEO, explains: “The benefit of an accelerator is so often in making sure the founders make fast progress and avoid common pitfalls. That’s where the expertise in the scale up process that DLA Piper are so rightly praised for can be so helpful.”
Senior associate Dylan Kennett, speaking on behalf of DLA Piper’s Emerging Growth and Venture Capital team added: “We’re delighted to be joining Chris and the team to help mould the next cohort of world beating companies who have climate change in their sights. We advise a great number of startups and scale-ups and it’s our goal to ensure we are passing on that know-how, and putting them on the best possible footing to succeed.”
Philip Allenby, co-lead of the DLA Piper Carbon13 team added: “We’ll be using our popular ‘Startup Pack’ as the legal backbone for the cohort, so companies can focus their resources on pursuing their business model, instead of legal fees. As a group, we’re very excited to be exposed to all the ideas that will percolate at Carbon13 and their collective mission aligns perfectly with ours as a business.”
DLA Piper shares our conviction that entrepreneurship has a vital part to play in achieving the transformation that the world needs to reach Net Zero, as well as the view that sustainability is key to future success. They have recently launched a Sustainability and ESG Portal to help companies around the world transition to and thrive in a more sustainable future. The portal provides views and insights of sustainability and ESG-related topics from thought leaders around the world, including their view on sustainability issues through a sectors lens, a vitally important element of the advise they provide their clients. You can also find an overview of the key areas that they see lawyers and professional services contributing to here.
Alongside the support they offer clients on all aspects of sustainability, DLA Piper is also on its own sustainability journey. They have signed up to Science Based Targets to reduce their own carbon footprint, and are conducting numerous other initiatives, including a materiality assessment.
Our first cohort of 60 entrepreneurs have begun their journey, and by the end of 2021 we aim to have launched 8-10 ventures from scratch, each one with the potential to reduce CO2e emissions by ten million tonnes.
