Maximising renewable energy in heating

Use system architecture to accelerate the shift to a zero-carbon grid

At Shuffle Energy, we’re building the future of zero carbon grid and clean heat. We are transforming one of the biggest challenges in the transition to net-zero into one of the UK’s greatest opportunities. Based in Cambridge, we are a fast-growing energy technology company developing the first specialist platform designed to unlock flexibility from smart heating and cooling systems, helping to balance the electricity grid while reducing carbon emissions and energy costs. Backed by One Planet Capital, Innovate UK, and leading energy-sector investors including the former CEO of SSE, Shuffle Energy is already being recognised as one of the UK’s most exciting climate tech businesses and was recently named one of the Top 7 Companies to Watch in Cambridge for 2026. Joining Shuffle means becoming part of a mission-driven team at the forefront of the energy transition working on cutting-edge technology with real-world impact, in an ambitious, collaborative environment where innovation, ownership, and purpose come together to reshape how the world heats its buildings and industries.

What You’ll Own

  • The technical backbone of a globally deployed energy platform with Edge-AI enabled controllers and gateway units
  • Architectural decisions that will shape Shuffle Energy’s scalability and competitiveness
  • A system designed not just for today—but for the next decade of energy innovation

We are seeking a Senior Systems Architect to lead the end-to-end design and evolution of our next-generation energy technology platform. This role spans embedded hardware controllers, industrial IoT (IIoT) systems, and scalable cloud infrastructure, supporting large-scale deployments across industrial and commercial energy sites in the UK and globally.

You will define and own the system architecture across edge devices and cloud, ensuring it is secure, scalable, standards-compliant, and future-proof. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring deep technical expertise, architectural vision, and the ability to translate complex energy system requirements into robust, production-ready solutions.

Why this role matters

Renewable energy works when it is used in the right place at the right time. The solutions you design will enable customers, partners, and internal teams to effectively measure, monitor, control, and significantly reduce energy costs and carbon emissions. This role spans edge computing, BMS systems, sensors, meters and large-scale cloud platforms, ensuring true end-to-end system design. If you like to own the full stack—from hardware to cloud, this role is for you.

Why this role is unique

  • Build for massive real-world scale: design architectures that reliably support tens of thousands of distributed industrial devices, not just isolated systems.
  • Combine building management and industrial control with modern IIoT: integrate real-time system within built environment and industrial set up with advanced connectivity (MQTT, OPC-UA / IEC 62541) and cloud-native data platforms.
  • Unite algorithms, data, and infrastructure: develop Edge-AI control models and translate them into production systems across both edge and cloud environments.
  • Blend deep technical leadership with hands-on engineering: set architectural direction while actively guiding firmware, hardware, and cloud implementation across teams.
  • Design for longevity, security, and evolution: prioritise secure, standards-compliant, and future-proof systems that can scale, adapt, and operate globally over time.

About you

You don’t need to tick every box – we value curiosity, leadership and the ability to learn quickly. You might be a great fit if you have:

  • 7+ years of experience in systems architecture, on-site controllers, or IIoT platforms
  • In-depth experience in designing, testing, or installing control interfaces for at least one of these commercial or industrial asset categories: Battery BESS inverters, HVAC systems, heat pumps, and thermal storage utilising IIOT controllers, PLCs, RTUs, or Building Management Systems (BMS/BEMS).
  • Strong domain background in energy systems, industrial automation, HVAC automation or similar industries
  • Deep knowledge in any of the industrial communication protocols (Modbus, BACnet, OPCC, MQTT, OPC-UA,)
  • Strong understanding of networking and secure communications
  • Experience with IEC 61131-3 (industrial automation programming)
  • Proficiency in at least one of the programming languages: C, C++, Go, or Python
  • Strong experience with embedded Linux, real-time systems, and controller design
  • Experience designing cloud-native architectures (Azure)
  • Deep expertise in time-series data systems (e.g. Postgres, InfluxDB)
  • Experience building data ingestion pipelines and streaming architectures
  • Solid understanding of microservices, containers, and distributed system design
  • Clear communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, startup environments
  • Able to travel to customer or manufacturer locations within the UK, EU, or internationally at short notice
  • Demonstrated interest in energy transition, sustainability, or emerging technologies

UK-based – we are not sponsoring visas at this time and will be looking to collaborate in-person at least once per month.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience building and validating models using MATLAB/Simulink or
  • Python scientific stacks and have the ability to translate models into production-grade code
  • Experience in energy optimisation, DERs (Distributed Energy Resources), or grid systems
  • Familiar with MD – Capacity charges, Export limitation and G99 requirements
  • Familiar with NIS Directive and Secure by Design principles.
  • Knowledge of AI/ML applications / Edge-AI in energy systems
  • Prior experience scaling global IIoT deployments
