Car efficiency improvement by driver feedback app

Rationale: Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower gas mileage by roughly 15% to 30% at highway speeds and 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic. Driver feedback devices can help with more efficient driving. Idea: This is a bit of a wild card. This is an idea I’ve had for at least 10 years and is based on my driving habits. When I drive in town, I try to adapt my speed to the expected next traffic light color so that I time it to arrive on a green to prevent stop and go. Obviously it depends on traffic, road, weather conditions. But if it can be done, it makes the driving smoother and prevents losing all the car’s momentum. So the idea is to develop a smartphone driving aid app which has knowledge (from known timing data obtained by partnering with cities) of the phase color of traffic lights vs time and helps you adjust your current driving speed to minimize stop-and go! The obvious hard part is 1/ get the traffic phase data from cities (so convincing them they gain from it too) and 2/ How to do the feedback safely with traffic.
