Carbon13 is delighted to invest in five more high potential climatetech startups drawn from all three of our programmes: the Venture Builders UK and EU, and the Venture Launchpad.

The five ventures span diverse sectors such as agriculture, the built environment, infrastructure, and energy, and yet are unified by the use of two of the most exciting areas of research in the world today: AI and biotechnology. Our five ventures here – and the seven we invested in last month – prove that the climate horizontal is a leading hotbed of science-led innovation.

Climate continues to be where our most talented founders choose to work, those with the appetite for complex, global, systemic challenges, and the cutting edge technologies that can solve them.

Meet the ventures

Fermeta – energy drink for cows which reduces methane and increases yields

Tetrax AI – Automation of clean-infrastructure project assessment and portfolio monitoring

Tenax AI – property risk and resilience platform for insurers and homeowners starting with wildfires

Recycle Roots – Biomass waste processing to create biochar, carbon credits and carbon negative heat and power

Composite Designers – Carbon negative brick/tile that locks away 1.2kg CO2e per kg of product

Fermeta

What is it – feed additive that reduces cow methane emissions while increasing yield – an energy drink for cows

The breakthrough – food additives reduce methane emissions in cows but so far they’re a costly input and in some cases, even reduce yields. Fermeta’s is the first which can reduce emissions and increase yields, incentivising the farmers.

Key wins – There’s 1000+ cattle lined up for trials; named as one of the TheDrop50 – Europe’s most promising startups in the climate space
Founder Niklas Koch

Tetrax AI

What is it – An AI-powered platform that automates clean-infrastructure project assessment and portfolio monitoring.

Big wins – They are 1 of just 12 startups accepted onto the prestigious Norrsken Evolve programme. Tetrax has also been awarded a NEOTEC grant, a highly competitive Spanish grant.

Why is the team so investable – A Machine Learning PhD, an Energy M&A Lawyer, and an international operations leader with Amazon experience.

Co-Founders: Marta Vizcaíno Martín, Arnau Tibau Puig, Ekaterina Filina

Recycle Roots

What is it – Biomass waste processing at source, to create biochar, carbon credits and carbon negative heat and power.

The breakthrough – Their proprietary tech can process wet organic waste, cutting out a costly step that other biochar makers can’t sidestep.

Traction so far – A long-term offtake LOI for 30,000 tonnes pa of biochar-based fertiliser, a partnership with the University of Bath, a £1.1m Innovate UK grant application with four national partners.

Co-Founders: Will Garrard CEO, Jake Payne, CTO

Composite Designers

What is it – Carbon negative brick/tile that locks away 1.2kg CO2e per kg of product

Why is this space investable – Bricks are the 3rd highest emitting material in construction. Composite Designers’ secret sauce turns them into massive stores of CO2 instead.

Why this team – 20 years+ materials scientist incl managing Imperial College London’s composites lab. And expert in construction decarbonisation and supply chain innovation to crack a tough industry.

Co-Founders: Frank Gommer, Paul Radziwill

Tenax AI

What is it – AI-powered property risk and resilience platform for insurers and homeowners — starting with wildfire

Why invest in this space – Extreme weather is creating a $1.6 trillion insurance gap in the US. Insurers can’t verify which properties are protected because current risk data is outdated, regional, and manually collected. The result: millions of insurable properties are left uninsured or overpriced.

Why is the team investable – Operators from B2B SaaS in highly regulated spaces; COO of a climate fintech, and a PhD in Machine Learning who led product at a telematics venture for insurers.

Co-founders: Elyse Myrans, CEO, Arun kishore Ramakrishnan, CTO

About the teams

  • 3:2 ratio of deeptech to AI-powered platforms
  • 3 out of 5 teams have at least one PhD cofounder
  • 40% have at least one female cofounder
  • Germany, Spain, the US, and the UK – beachhead geographies
  • 10 million tonnes – each startup has demonstrated the potential to mitigate CO2e emissions by at least 10 million tonnes per year when at scale
