Carbon13 is delighted to announce investments into seven more high-potential cleantech startups. Three are alumni of our EU Venture Builder, testament to our mission to be Europe’s leading climatetech Venture Builder and the bridge for the EU-UK climatetech ecosystem.

Building the future of Europe

Europe’s competitiveness has long been in the strength of its research institutions, its leadership in science, and the talent of its entrepreneurs.

The continent is now reaching for a future with resilience, reindustrialisation and decarbonisation at its core, a future that our founders are already building.

Here’s just a taste of how our ventures are contributing to Europe’s resilience:

Shifted – energy storage through unique combination of compressed hydro and air that’s more efficient, can be deployed anywhere in Europe, and is free of critical materials and rare earths.

S2S Dynamics – AI-powered platform for E-waste circularity that connects European brands and recyclers, to reduce imports, reduce waste exports, and maximise value for European manufacturers.

Astracite – green graphite for high performance lithium batteries, made in Europe from recycled materials, again freeing battery makers from importing critical materials or destructive mining practices.

All seven ventures demonstrate the breadth of the climate tech horizontal, spanning sectors such as e-waste, batteries, energy storage, medtech, and skincare. They are developing fundamental breakthroughs, from the science fiction (growing collagen in plants) to the everyday: plastic-free medical home testing kits.

Safeguarding the planet

Each venture has proven an impact case of potential decarbonisation by at least 10 million tonnes per year when at scale, including cases such as scaling local green energy, replacing fossil fuel products with Europe-made alternatives, reducing Europe’s plastic waste by millions of tonnes, or replacing imported animal products with the locally bioengineered.

Carbon13’s CEO Nicky Dee comments:

“I’m excited by what these ventures represent — proof that when top founders find the right team, the impact is catalytic. At Carbon13, we exist to help world-class founders build world-changing companies through a world-leading teaming process. Because we’re independent, we can work with anyone, anywhere — united only by talent, mission, and the drive to execute with quality and speed.”

Now meet all seven ventures in depth

Nanoplume

What is it – super insulating bio-materials

Why is it cool – turning a once expensive spacetech into affordable, super-insulating, ultra-light, ultra-thin, and 100% biodegradable and non-toxic material for use here on earth, where the climate crisis is.

Why is the team investable – three founders, with two PhDs and two serial founders among them. Deep subject expertise.

Shifted

What is it – energy storage through compressed air

Why is it brilliant – electricity at half the cost of lithium, deployable anywhere, no critical materials

Why is the team so investable – team brings 60 years of collective experience from startups incl. nuclear fusion, R&D at big corporations and academic research at Harvard and Princeton.

Astracite

What is it – green graphite for batteries

Why is it necessary – made in Europe, no need for mined or imported materials, higher energy density, cost comparable, 97% less emitting than conventional anodes

Why is the space investable – the already vast anode material market is growing 20% annually, and the team have great founder-problem fit

S2S Dynamics

What is it – AI platform for electronics circularity

What impressed us – Traction and execution: beta is built, customers onboarded. They’re rethinking the entire electronics life cycle and solving systemic challenges to transform the industry.

Why this team – strong breadth, AI and hardtech founder experience, strong mission founder fit.

Nina Energy

What is it – modular biorefineries that create heat, fuel, and biochar

Why invest in this space – the Latin American market is particularly suited for scalable modular solutions to biowaste for renewable heat, low carbon fuel and high integrity credits, with diversified revenue streams.

Traction – contract with Atmosfair, validated pilot, purchase offers at $890/tonne

Hoopsy

What is it – plastic free medical tests with companion app

Why invest in this space – there’s 30 billion tests used each year, contributing to microplastics and carbon emissions. Hoopsy’s launching in the US next year as their beachhead market.

Why is the founder standout – Lara’s a serial founder who’s secured serious traction already

LeafyColl

What is it – plant-grown collagen bioidentical to human collagen

Why is it ingenious – plant molecular farming can have 25x yields on microbial systems. As this is replacing bovine collagen, this is a unique low carbon, vegan and halal option for the massive collagen market.

Why is the team investable – two PhDs and combined decades in relevant fields such as plant biochemistry

The key numbers

  • 5/7 – teams with at least one female founder
  • 33% – founders with a PhD
  • 47% – serial founders
  • 70 million tonnes – potential annual decrease in Co2e emissions
  • 93 – number of Carbon13 invested ventures

Michael Langguth, Founding Partner of Carbon13 and crucial to our EU-UK bridge, has this to say:

“I’m delighted to bring more EU-based startups into the Carbon13 fold. We see our role as a bridge for Cambridge scientific rigour and UK entrepreneurial ambition with European talent and appetite for investment in clean technologies. Our European ventures are not only high potential in decarbonisation, their approaches to circularity, local alternatives to critical materials, and energy security are exactly what Europe’s future holds. Our ventures are contributing to the resilience of Europe’s future.”
