This episode of our podcast is dedicated to the biggest Carbon13 milestone yet – we just hit 100 invested ventures!

That’s 100 invested climate startups since we signed our first cheques in 2021. We booted up our website in 2020 and welcomed the first fifty founders through our door in March 2021 – now over 1500 have participated in a Carbon13 programme. The current portfolio is working towards a potential Co2e emissions reduction of an incredible 340 million tonnes per year – that’s just under 1% of global emissions right now.

So let’s chat with Nicky, Michael and Sara about our 100 invested ventures milestone, including:

– The mission of Carbon13’s portfolio and why we’ve built it

– Examples of startups that embody the Carbon13 story (hard to pick from 100!)

– What people misunderstand about “impact”

– How climate’s changed since 2020 and by extension, how climate entrepreneurs should approach 2026.

“The climatetech space has become more sophisticated. We’ve got a better understanding of not just the tech, but where the commercial opportunities are. And increasingly, we do expect founders to enter with some sort of an idea, either a commercial frustration or a technical trajectory that they’ve been pursuing for the last few years. We love that because most of our teams typically do hit the ground running.”
Nicky Dee

CEO and Cofounder, Carbon13

“We really dig deep into the kind of motivation, what drives this person, why do they want to do it? Because we want to see that we have somebody in front of us who has real commitment. In recent years, AI engineers and people that have an AI-first mentality is something that we have increasingly looked for. Then there’s science, where synthetic biology, for example, gives us a lot of opportunities to build climate ventures in new materials or ingredients for FMCG food products.”
Michael Langguth

Cofounder, Carbon13
