The Solution
Kestrix is on a mission to unlock energy retrofits of existing buildings at scale. To do this they are building the ‘Google Maps of heat loss’ – they commission thermal drones flights over whole neighbourhoods at a time, and develop computer vision and machine learning algorithms to quantify and map heat loss from buildings in 3D, as well as generate energy efficiency retrofit roadmaps. It is effectively the automated energy surveyor – or the data layer to power the climate transition of existing buildings.
The Problem
To hit net zero targets, more than 5 buildings must be retrofitted for energy efficiency globally every single minute between now and 2050. But retrofit has a data problem today, an energy surveyor must visit each property, assess heat loss manually, and come up with a list of recommended actions – a process that can take 2-3 hours per building. By applying machine learning and computer vision to thermal images of buildings (captured by drones), Kestrix makes the automation of energy surveys at scale possible – identifying where heat is escaping, and recommending retrofit actions instantly, without going inside, and for the fraction of a cost of a manual survey.
